First off, what is PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) Therapy?
PRP consists of drawing your blood and spinning it down to get the plasma. Plasma is the liquid part of your blood that’s mostly made of water and protein. It lets red and white blood cells and platelets move through your bloodstream. Platelets are a type of blood cell that makes your blood clot. They also play a role in healing.
What are the benefits?
- It can help heal torn tendons.
- It can help with tendinitis.
- It helps to heal muscle injuries.
- It can help with arthritis-related pain.
- It can help with joint injuries.
- It can help with hair loss!
Over the years, we have performed hundreds of PRP injections. It is the use of your body’s blood to stimulate cartilage and connective tissue (ligament, tendon) repair.
Because we concentrate Platelets from the blood, you get more attention to the area than would happen with simple Physical Therapy or Time. After radiology (x-Ray or MRI) of the joint involved, we discuss the Pro’s and Con’s of this therapy and what a conventional Orthopedic protocol would look like.
Remember, this is the opposite of a steroid injection, so there is an increase in the immune response for three to four days after the treatment.
We often say that patients get 50% pain relief after the first treatment. We ask patients not to use anti-inflammatory drugs during the procedure. Herbs and natural supplements are okay.
A Typical protocol is one treatment a week for four weeks. The patient returns for the fifth treatment in six weeks, and we re-evaluate.
We suggest an entire program of physician grade supplements that speed your recovery during that time.
